Short presentation

Stefan Sjöström is the first holder of the chair in social work in Uppsala. His research covers broad areas of social work. In terms of theoretical approaches, he has been concerned with matters of power and social control, particularly manifestations at a micro-level. Empirical areas of expertise are mental health, coercive interventions, court proceedings, and sexualized violence.

Biography

Stefan Sjöström was awarded a PhD in Communication Studies at Linköpings University in 1997. Since then he has been a Senior Lecturer in Media and Communication Studies at Umeå University, he has been a Senior Research Fellow at Luleå University of Technology and served as a project leader at the Nordic School for Public Health in Göteborg. Prior to accepting the chair in Uppsala in 2018, he was a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the Department of Social Work, Umeå Unviersity. In 2006, he was appointed Associate Professor in Social Work at Umeå University.

Sjöström has spent two one-year terms as visiting scholar in New Zealand. In 2004/5 at the National Centre for Social Ethics at Auckland University of Technology, and in 2015 at the Department of Sociology at University of Auckland. In 2025, he spent six months at the Centre for Sociolegal Studies at Oxford University.

Research

Together with Maritha Jacobsson, Stefan Sjöström leads the research group Conceptualising ConTrol and Violence (CCTV).
