Biography

Janne Lindqvist (born 1969) is Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor (Docent) of Rhetoric at Uppsala University. He received his PhD in Comparative Literature from Uppsala University in 2002 and has since taught and supervised widely in rhetoric and literary studies, both at Uppsala University and at several other higher-education institutions. His research focuses on the intellectual history of rhetoric and classical rhetorical theory, with particular emphasis on early Greek rhetoric, Aristotle, and on how argumentation, judgement, and the authority of law are shaped in political and institutional contexts. He is Director of Studies for the BA Programme in Rhetoric and the BA Programme in Comparative Literature, and in 2024 he received Uppsala University’s Teaching Excellence Award within the disciplinary domain of Theology, Humanities and Educational Sciences.

Internationally, he has served as an invited guest lecturer at the University of Groningen (Spring School History of Emotions) and is a board member of the International Society for the History of Rhetoric (ISHR). Long ago he also worked as an entertainment musician—a side track that may still make performance and public speaking particularly engaging.

Research

The Science of the Gob: Ideas of the Art of Speaking from Antiquity to the Liberal Breakthrough

Book manuscript on how ideas about speech, writing, and argumentation are formed and renegotiated from early writing cultures to the public sphere and educational ideals of the Enlightenment.

Nothing to Do with Democracy?

An ongoing study (article/essay project) examining the notion that rhetoric “belongs” to democracy, through close readings of Aristotle, Rhetorica ad Alexandrum, and Sophistic material, with connections to questions of the rule of law, procedure, and judgement.

Rhetoric, Democracy, and the Rule of Law in Classical Greek Thought

Work in progress developing and testing an argument about the relationship between rhetoric, regime type, and the authority of law in classical Greek sources.
