About the Community Barometer

The Community Barometer is a research project that examines patterns of trust, safety and social cohesion across different parts of Sweden. It explores how local conditions are associated with people's perceptions of one another and of public institutions. A key insight from the project is that, although Sweden maintains high levels of social trust overall, trust differs markedly across local communities and is closely associated with safety, a sense of belonging and shared civic norms.

Who is Lars Trägårdh?

Lars Trägårdh is a Swedish historian, public intellectual and visiting professor at Uppsala University. His research has focused on the Swedish social contract, the Nordic model, social trust and the role of civil society in democracy. At the Institute for Housing and Urban Research (IBF), he leads the Community Barometer project, which examines trust, safety and social cohesion across Sweden.

Trägårdh has served on several public commissions, including as Chair of the government inquiry A Cultural Canon for Sweden and as a member of the Swedish Government's Commission on the Future of Sweden.

About ICM TALKS!

ICM TALKS! is an initiative from ICM’s Equal Opportunities group. Its aim is to create meeting spaces that foster curiosity, reflection, and exchange within the department. By highlighting topics beyond strictly scientific themes, students and staff gain the opportunity to explore issues related to Swedish culture, society, and history.
