On 12 November, Dr. Anders Tegnell visited the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (ICM) for a fully booked ICM TALKS! seminar. Under the title “Daring to stand up for what you believe in – when the whole world went mad,” he shared his experiences from the COVID-19 pandemic and his journey from state epidemiologist to a globally debated public figure.

On 12 November, lecture hall A1:107 filled with ICM students and colleagues eager to hear Dr. Anders Tegnell deliver the second ICM TALKS! seminar of the year. In his talk, he offered a personal and thoughtful look at how Sweden approached the COVID-19 pandemic, the considerations behind key decisions, and the ways international debate shaped both the work and his role in the public eye.

Tegnell also spoke about his journey from the relatively quiet civil-service position he took on in 2013 as state epidemiologist to suddenly finding himself, in 2020, at the center of a global conversation about strategy, responsibility, and the broader societal impacts of the pandemic.

From anonymous civil servant to globally debated figure

Tegnell described his path from the traditional civil-service role he assumed in 2013 as state epidemiologist to suddenly finding himself, in 2020, at the center of a worldwide discussion on strategy, responsibility, and societal consequences.

As state epidemiologist, he became the face of Sweden’s COVID-19 strategy — a strategy that attracted attention both nationally and internationally. During the lecture, he offered a personal account of what it was like to go from being a relatively unknown public official to being mentioned daily in both Swedish and global media during one of the most significant crises of our time.

He reflected on how the Swedish approach, which relied more on recommendations and individual responsibility than on strict lockdowns, sparked both interest and extensive debate. In an engaging and often humorous way, Tegnell explained how he navigated the intense pressure, rapid decision-making, and high expectations that came with the role in 2020. He also spoke openly about the early surge of criticism directed at him personally, as well as the support and appreciation that grew over time.

Science, society, and responsibility

The lecture blended pandemic insights with personal reflections. A central theme was the importance of safeguarding the lessons learned from the pandemic. Tegnell emphasized that it is now crucial to maintain and further develop the knowledge gained during the pandemic years in order to be better prepared for future crises.

The talk was followed by a lively discussion, giving the audience an opportunity to ask questions ranging from strategic decisions to the international criticisms that emerged. Many participants expressed appreciation for the opportunity to hear a direct, nuanced, and thoughtful account from one of Sweden’s most talked-about public figures during the pandemic.

About ICM TALKS!

ICM TALKS! is an initiative from ICM’s Equal Opportunities group. Its aim is to create meeting spaces that foster curiosity, reflection, and exchange within the department. By highlighting topics beyond strictly scientific themes, students and staff gain the opportunity to explore issues related to Swedish culture, society, and history.
