RESTOR

The main objective of the project is to develop and apply a multi-criteria Renewable Energy STORage (RESTOR) planning model for islands to support their decision-making for their energy system transformation. RESTOR will incorporate multiple sustainability criteria (economic, environmental, technical, social) in the evaluation, selection and ranking of possible energy storage projects taking into account regional needs and the perspectives of end users while also seeking to integrate the projects into existing and future regional planning. Application of the RESTOR model includes four (4) case-studies (Pilots) in the EU and beyond, i.e. (i) the Aran islands, Ireland (population 850), (ii) Gotland island, Sweden (population 62,000), (iii) La Réunion island, France overseas (population 900,000), (iv) Brazil at Remanso region which is another non-interconnected area. Results will be validated/tested in three (3) other locations (Followers) in the EU and beyond, i.e. (a) Lesvos island, Greece; (b) Fiji (group of islands - archipelago) and (c) Brazil, on Fernando de Noronha island. The project’s steps include: presentation of the current state-of-the-art which is comprised of the definitions of relevant concepts; the description of the methods used and the specification of system requirements; the development of the RESTOR Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) planning model; application of the RESTOR model to the four Pilots and comparative analysis of the results; model validation, replication and scaling of the process to the Follower islands; summing up of the overall lessons learned and knowledge sharing as well as development of policy issues, business models and recommendations. It is expected that RESTOR will provide informed guidance to regional planners and Decision-Makers (DMs) in order to identify, implement and integrate an appropriate portfolio of energy storage projects with existing or planned Renewable Energy Sources (RES) production facilities on their islands.
