On Housing Demolitions: Effects on Neighborhoods and Individuals

We will study the demolition of residential buildings in Sweden between 1960 and 1993. We will use population register data combined with detailed property information to identify where and when demolitions took place. An important aim is to estimate the effects of multi-dwelling building demolitions both on neighborhood development and on the development of residential segregation in the city as a whole. We will also use individual-level data to estimate the social and economic effects for the people who lived in the demolished buildings. The analyses will be carried out separately for children and adults. The results of this project are crucial for providing better grounds for a policy discussion that is highly relevant today.
