Pharmacology

Pharmacology is the science that studies the effects of drugs on biological systems and the mechanisms by which these effects occur. The subject is one of the core pharmaceutical subjects.

Pharmacology encompasses the effects of drugs on the body (pharmacodynamics) and how drugs are administered, transported in the body, and metabolized and excreted (pharmacokinetics). Knowledge in pharmacology is central to understanding the treatment of diseases, the development of new drugs, and to ensuring the safe and effective use of drugs.

Basic courses in the subject are given in the pharmacy program, the prescription program, and the master of science program. At the advanced level, we offer elective and independent courses as well as project courses focusing on neuropharmacology and addiction studies. The project courses are usually laboratory-based and can also provide opportunities for study abroad through collaborations within our international networks.

Research activities at the department include drug development, primarily with regard to neuropharmacology and biological addiction research, but also in the fields of pain and dementia research.
