Frequently asked questions

Questions about admission.

Do you have admission both spring and autumn?

For the social work programme and the Master’s programme in social science − social work, we admit students in the autumn semester each year. We also provide a number of stand-alone courses at second-cycle level during both the spring and autumn semesters.

Can I change my place of education to Uppsala?

If you are studying a programme in another location, you cannot transfer to Uppsala. You need to apply for the programme from the beginning via antagning.se. After admission, the department can assess whether you can possibly credit any of your previous studies.

The exception is if you want to study second-cycle level courses in social work. At the second-cycle level, we also offer courses in social work as stand-alone courses. These are also open to applications from students who are not studying the programme at Uppsala University.

How does my work experience apply to the selection groups?

The selection groups for the social work programme are Grades − 37%; Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test − 33%; and places for applicants with four years of work experience at least half-time – 30%. The places in the selection group based on work experience are divided into half grade selection and half sample selection. The selection group is supported by certificates. See more information on the page antagning.se, certificate of work experience (Swedish).

All applications are made through antagning.se, and you must upload your certificates there yourself; see upload certificates. It is important that the certificates arrive on time.

No, you cannot. The courses included in the social work programme are not available as stand-alone courses. The exception is courses given at second-cycle level during the seventh semester.

This varies from semester to semester. You can search for the information on the website of the Swedish Council for Higher Education, where there are statistics for programmes and courses throughout Sweden:

Questions about study plans

No, it is not. All teaching takes place on campus. The exception is placement in the fifth semester within the social work programme, which can take place in another location by agreement.

The studies are conducted on campus, and the number of meetings is shown in the schedule for each course. On average, there are lectures or seminars about three times a week, which corresponds to about six-eight hours of teacher-led teaching per week; the rest of the study time consists of group work, seminars, your own reading and more.

Questions about student finance

You can either call or email the study advisors to schedule a meeting. You can find contact details on the department’s website, study guidance.

If you have a permanent disability that becomes an obstacle in your studies, you can receive support during your study time at the university. Remember to apply for pedagogical support in good time, preferably when you apply for a course at Uppsala University. Here is more information:

Pedagogical support

There are coordinators who work with targeted pedagogical support for students and doctoral students with disabilities, both in Uppsala and on Gotland. When you have received a decision on adaptation, you can contact the department’s study guidance.

Questions about the degree

The social work programme leads to a social work degree, which is a professional degree. When you have studied semesters –one-six of the social work programme, you can also apply for a general philosophy Bachelor’s degree, with the main field of social work. You can find more information on the university’s degree page.
