Every year ShanghaiRanking Consultancy ranks the world’s universities in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), generally referred to as the ‘Shanghai Ranking’. The list covers the top 500 of the world’s more than 20,000 universities and is based on six different indicators, including number of articles in the Science Citation Index and the Social Sciences Citation Index, and number of staff winning Nobel Prizes.

The Shanghai Ranking also contains a subject ranking in a total of 54 academic subjects. Uppsala University’s subject rankings include political science, where the University comes in at number 33, and physics, where the University comes in at number 39. In Oceanography (place 46) and nursing (place 49) Uppsala University also has top 50 placings.

Harvard University tops the list for the 16th year and Stanford University and the University of Cambridge also take places two and three this year. The top 10 also includes MIT, Berkeley, Princeton, Oxford, Columbia, Caltech and Chicago.
