Swedish and South African universities come together online to address sustainability challenges

Climate, education, healthcare, sustainable communities, urban sustainability and IT security. These are the themes that will be discussed when the South Africa - Sweden University Forum (SASUF) holds its first online forum 23–27 November 2020. There has been tremendous interest from both countries, and over 50 seminars will be held on the different themes.

South Africa – Sweden University Forum (SASUF) is a partnership among 37 Swedish and South African universities aimed at strengthening collaboration between the countries on research, education and innovation.

Researchers, students and university leaders will meet online 23–27 November to discuss sustainability challenges. During previous forums, over 1,000 researchers, decision-makers and representatives for research funding councils and industry met to establish collaborations.

“This collaboration has gained a lot of attention from the start, and many people and groups want to take part. This is why we are so happy that this year’s digital version will be able to accommodate even more participants during the online meeting SASUF Goes Digital. New for this year is that several seminars are organised both by and for students,” says Gustaf Cars, project manager for SASUF at the Division for Internationalisation at Uppsala University.

Focus on six themes

The main focus for this year’s programme is researchers and students meeting under six themes related to the challenges of the 2030 Agenda.

  • Climate
  • Education
  • Healthcare
  • Sustainable communities
  • Urban sustainability
  • IT security

The seminars aim to stimulate interdisciplinary collaborations at both the individual and organisational levels with the mutual interest of strengthening ties within research, education and innovation.
