Five ERC Consolidator Grants to Uppsala researchers
The European Research Council (ERC) has published the results of its 2020 call for proposals for Consolidator Grants. Fourteen researchers at Swedish higher education institutions have been awarded grants. Five of these go to researchers linked to Uppsala University – two in the Life Sciences, two in the Physical Sciences and Engineering, and one in the Social Sciences and Humanities
ERC Consolidator Grants are intended for researchers who have recently established a research group and who want to strengthen their role as heads of research. Applicants are to have the potential to become international leaders in their field.
“To prepare for the challenges of tomorrow, Europe must stick to the vision of investing in frontier research, which has proved time and again its crucial added value,” says ERC President, Professor Jean-Pierre Bourguigno. “This funding empowers bright minds from across Europe to pursue their most ambitious ideas at a critical stage of their careers.”
A total of 327 leading European researchers from 23 countries share the €655 million awarded as part of ERC Consolidator Grant 2020. The grants are a part of the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, and they are awarded in three domains: Life Sciences, Physical and Engineering Sciences, and Social Sciences and Humanities.
Researchers in the United Kingdom (50), Germany (50), France (34) and the Netherlands (29) received the most grants. Swedish higher education institutions received 14 grants. Of these, five researchers at Uppsala University received grants: two in the Life Sciences, two in the Physical Sciences and Engineering, and one in the Social Sciences and Humanities.
