More researching nurses are needed

Nurses who research – how do we get more? This is the theme of a panel discussion during Almedalen Week. “In Sweden, there is a shortage of nurses with PhDs,” says Karin Forsberg Nilsson, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Uppsala University and one of the organisers.

The panel discussion is being organised through a collaboration between Uppsala University and Forska!Sverige. Why is this an important issue?

“In Sweden, there is a shortage of nurses with PhDs, and far too few continue their research careers after completing their doctoral studies. If nurses are given better research opportunities, it can lead to more people choosing to stay in the university medical system. Nurses with a doctoral education are needed not only for the university medical system, but also for research and education.”

The debate brings together representatives from universities, healthcare and politics. Who is your target audience?

“We welcome anyone with an interest in discussing how obstacles can be overcome and how the research careers of nurses can be better supported to encourage more people to participate in the research that will shape the healthcare of tomorrow. Efforts are needed to reverse the current trend.”

What is the situation at Uppsala University? Are any special efforts being made here to provide better research opportunities for nurses?

“Good collaboration with Uppsala University Hospital/Region Uppsala is a prerequisite. It is therefore encouraging that the Swedish Research Council's report on the evaluation of clinical research quality praises the close collaboration between the Region and the University. All healthcare professions can already apply for research positions funded through the ALF agreement, two new professors who are nurses have been hired in recent years, and Uppsala University is participating in the newly established Doctoral School in Healthcare Science. But there is still a lot to do!”
