Academic leave of absence

A leave of absence can be granted if you meet any of the special conditions stated in the Higher Education Ordinance. If you have a reason other than those specified in the statutes, your department decides whether the leave of absence can be granted. If you have been granted a leave of absence, you have a guaranteed right to return to your studies.

The decision will indicate when you are due to resume your studies. If you cannot return to your studies at that time, you can apply for a new leave of absence.

Appeals

If you are denied a leave of absence, you can appeal the decision to the Higher Education Appeals Board (Överklagandenämnden för högskolan). The Uppsala University Registrar must receive the appeal within three weeks from the decision. State the decision you wish to appeal and its registration number. The appeal will be registered at Uppsala University and then sent to the Higher Education Appeals Board, which will decide on the appeal.

Discontinuation

If you want to terminate your studies on a programme, you must report it to the department. If you want to terminate your studies on a course, you can report the discontinuation of studies via Ladok for students.

If you make an unannounced interruption of studies, without having applied for and being granted an academic leave of absence, you have no guaranteed place to resume your studies. If a place is available, you may be allowed to resume your studies.
