Aims

The Master's Programme in International and European Law and Business aims to provide in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge of the legal system's strategic importance for business in an international, and particularly in a European, context. The programme will provide an understanding of the opportunities and problems related to different ways of operating in international markets, such as cross-border trade, market entry, or international business cooperation. Furthermore, the programme aims to prepare the student to collaborate systematically to ensure that, with the resources available, the client's activities are designed to reconcile business objectives with applicable legal rules and ethical considerations.

Upon completion of the programme, the student should have obtained advanced knowledge making the student well equipped to take a leading role in the development of international businesses, particularly within the EU.

Learning outcomes

In terms of knowledge and understanding, upon completion of the programme the student should have acquired

  • knowledge and understanding in the field of international commercial law (in particular EU commercial law) with an international business perspective, including both broad knowledge of the field and advanced knowledge related to the different ways of operating in international markets,
  • an in-depth understanding of current research and developments in the above areas and
  • advanced knowledge of theory and methodology in the above areas.

In terms of skills and abilities, by the end of the programme the student should have acquired and be able to demonstrate

  • the ability to integrate knowledge in the fields of international and European commercial law and international business,
  • the ability to analyse, assess and manage complex commercial law phenomena, issues and situations in international business involving legal and/or ethical aspects, even with limited information,
  • the ability to identify and formulate issues independently and to plan and carry out qualified tasks within given time limits using appropriate methods,
  • the ability to clearly present and discuss, orally and in writing, one's conclusions and the underlying knowledge and arguments in dialogue with different groups, and
  • the skills required for participation in research and development work or for work in other qualified activities.

In terms of judgement and approach, by the end of the programme the students should have acquired

  • the ability to make judgements in the field of international and European commercial law with an international business perspective, regarding relevant scientific, societal and ethical aspects, and to demonstrate an awareness of the ethical aspects of research and development work,
  • an understanding of the possibilities and limitations of science, its role in society and people's responsibility for its use and
  • the ability to identify the need for further knowledge and to take responsibility for keeping one's knowledge development up to date.

Layout of the programme

The programme comprises 60 credits. Central to the programme are current themes in international and European commercial law with business perspectives. The programme consists of joint, advanced level courses that are mandatory to all students. The independent choice of a topic for a Master thesis in the Master thesis course (15 credits) leads to particular in-depth learning concerning that topic.

The programme studies the focus areas of international and European commercial law with integrated elements of international business. During the first course, the focus areas are introduced in order to create a common basic understanding of the subject content and of the theoretical and methodological orientation of commercial law. In later courses, the studies are deepened through a combination of traditional teaching, theoretical and methodological studies, and joint interdisciplinary cases/projects. The programme concludes with a degree project, which is presented in a thesis. The thesis is written in pairs, with the two students having, as far as possible, an educational background in different main fields of studies. The thesis may be based on a project work in collaboration with an external party and/or link to current research in the field.

Commercial law is the main field of study of the programme's courses, including the thesis.

The programme follows a fixed syllabus, which means that the courses and semesters will be studied in a set order.

Instruction

Teaching is conducted in the form of lectures, seminars, and oral and written cases/projects. Examination in courses takes the form of written exams, oral and written presentations, and thesis. Completed courses are graded "fail", "pass" or "pass with distinction".

Degree

The programme leads to a Master's degree with commercial law as the main field of study. The Master's degree is obtained upon completion of course requirements worth of a total of 60 credits. At least 30 credits must be in the main field of study, including a degree project worth 15 credits.
