Entry requirements
Academic requirements
A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university.
Language requirements
Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6. This requirement can be met either by achieving the required score on an internationally recognised test, or by previous upper secondary or university studies in some countries. Aims
The aim of the programme is:
- gain in-depth knowledge in the field of heritage and sustainability,
- be able to deepen their knowledge of the different specialisations of the main field of conservation,
- acquire in-depth methodological and theoretical knowledge in the main field of conservation,
- acquire good analytical skills, a critical approach and the ability to formulate and carry out small-scale research tasks,
- acquire the prerequisites for admission to doctoral studies in conservation, and
- be equipped for advanced professional tasks in the heritage sector.
Learning outcomes
Upon completing the programme students will be able to:
regarding knowledge and understanding
- demonstrate in-depth knowledge of heritage and sustainability as a field of research, including current research and development work, and
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the main field of conservation, including both a broad knowledge of the field and a substantially deeper knowledge of certain parts of the field, as well as an in-depth knowledge of theories and methods.
regarding competence and skills
- demonstrate the ability to critically and systematically integrate knowledge and to analyse, assess and manage complex phenomena, issues and situations even with limited information,
- demonstrate the ability to identify and formulate questions critically, independently and creatively, to plan and carry out qualified tasks within given time frames using appropriate methods, thereby contributing to the development of knowledge, and to evaluate this work,
- demonstrate the ability to present and discuss clearly, orally and in writing, their conclusions and the knowledge and arguments on which they are based, in dialogue with different groups, in both national and international contexts, and
- demonstrate the skills required to participate in research and development work or to work independently in other qualified activities.
regarding judgement and approach
- demonstrate the ability to make judgements in the field of conservation taking into account relevant scientific, societal and ethical aspects and demonstrate awareness of ethical aspects of research and development work,
- demonstrate an understanding of the possibilities and limitations of science, its role in society and people's responsibility for its use, and
- demonstrate the ability to identify their need for further knowledge and to take responsibility for their own knowledge development.
Layout of the programme
The programme comprises two years. The first year of studies can lead to a one-year Master's degree. The second year of studies leads to a two-year Master's degree. It is possible to complement a previous one-year Master's degree in order to obtain a two-years Master's degree.
The programme includes compulsory courses (15 credits), elective courses (60 credits) and a thesis of 45 credits. During semesters two and three, the elective courses offer the opportunity to do an internship or participate in an international student exchange through the University's and the department's exchange agreements.

A one-year or two-year Master's degree (60 or 120 credits respectively) in conservation.
