Emir Karagul, alumnus from Turkey
I believe the field has great potential, and there are valuable opportunities for those committed to advancing in this area.
Can you explain what your subject, battery technology and energy storage, is to someone who doesn’t know?
– It is the study of how batteries work, focusing on their key components such as electrodes, electrolytes, and separators. It involves understanding the materials used in these components, how their properties affect battery performance, and the methods used to characterise and analyse them. Overall, it combines material science, electrochemistry, and engineering to develop more efficient and durable energy storage solutions.
What made you choose to study this subject?
– I was initially interested in electric vehicles, which led me to realize how central batteries are to their performance and sustainability. As I learned more, I became fascinated by the science behind batteries — how they can be improved, and their role in the future of clean energy.
What was the best thing about the programme?
– It was the combination of engaging instruction and hands-on experience. The instructors and researchers were highly knowledgeable and passionate, which made lectures stimulating and deepened my interest in battery technology. Additionally, seminars and guest lectures from industry experts broadened my understanding of current trends and future directions in energy storage.
What does the labour market look like?
– It is growing globally, but in Europe, it has been somewhat competitive and challenging recently, especially due to economic fluctuations and evolving industry demands. I faced some difficulties finding a job right after graduation, which made me realise the importance of gaining practical experience and building a strong professional network. Despite these challenges, I believe the field has great potential and there are valuable opportunities for those committed to advancing in this area.
Where do you work now? Tell us a little about what you are doing.
– I am currently employed as an Industrial PhD candidate at Percy Roc, where I focus on materials chemistry and battery technology. My research involves developing and optimising battery materials to improve performance and sustainability, with a particular emphasis on using microwave heating to enhance manufacturing processes. This role allows me to combine academic research with practical industry applications.
Have you had any contact with Uppsala University since you graduated?
– Yes, I have maintained strong contact with Uppsala University since graduating. One of my main supervisors is still actively involved in my work, providing valuable guidance. Additionally, many of my close friends are from the university, so I continue to stay connected both professionally and personally.
Your best advice for someone who is considering studying battery technology and energy storage?
– Stay curious and open-minded, as this is a rapidly evolving field. It’s important to build a strong foundation in the fundamentals while gaining practical experience through labs, projects, or internships. Staying updated with industry trends and networking with professionals will also help you succeed. Studying at Uppsala University offers not only excellent academic opportunities but also a welcoming community where you can meet new people and build lasting friendships.
