General provisions

Responsible for the course is Centre for Gender Research. The course is part of the one-year Master programme given by Centre for Gender Research.

Entry requirements

Students admitted to a one or two year Master programme of the Faculty of Arts or students with a Bachelor's degree.

Learning outcomes

The course aim is to give an overview and deeper introduction to critical studies of men and masculinities. This will be done by looking at the different methods and theories that are used in the studies of masculinities. The student will: Acquire advanced insights in critical studies of men and masculinities. Be able to make comparisons between the construction of masculinities in different cultures and historical periods. Develop an understanding of the relationship between masculinities studies and other disciplines and theories in gender studies. Be able to use and understand theories regarding masculinities. Gain a higher level of consciousness on how gender is constructed and the relevance of gender perspectives. Acquire the capacity to both orally and in writing use theories regarding masculinities. Attain skills in problem identification and solving, communication and knowledge sharing. develop creative skills and a concern for quality.

Instruction

The course is concentrated around seminars. The students will also work with a shorter paper. Active participation in the seminars is obligatory. The students have the right to tuition only during the ordinary course period

Assessment

Examination forms include an active participation in the seminars and writing a paper based on the theme of the course. Grades will be given in accordance to the Swedish grading system and ECTS grading system. The following grades will be used: Väl Godkänd (corresponds to A or B), Godkänd (corresponds to C, D or E) and Underkänd (corresponds to F)
