A Bachelor's degree with a language subject as the main field of study.

Learning outcomes

Subcourse 1: Hindi grammar and oral and written language skills in Hindi I (7.5 credits)

The subcourse aims to provide basic knowledge of Hindi grammar, especially its phonology and morphology, as well as oral and written language skills.

For the grade Pass, after completing the course the student should be able to

• explain the Hindi sound system
• describe the main features of Hindi form theory
• master simple verb constructions in Hindi
• read, write and transcribe Devanāgarī
• formulate simple sentences in Hindi
• master the grammatical terminology to describe Hindi
• carry out a contrastive description of morphology or syntax in comparison with an other studied language.

Subcourse 2: Hindi grammar and oral and written language skills in Hindi II (7.5 credits)

The subcourse aims to provide an in-depth study of Hindi grammar and vocabulary as well as more advanced oral and written communication.

For the grade Pass, after completing the course the student should be able to

• translate simple texts to and from Hindi with the help of a dictionary
• read simple Hindi texts in Devanāgarī without difficulty
• grammatically analyze simple prose texts in Hindi.

Content

Subcourse 1: Hindi grammar and oral and written language skills in Hindi I (7.5 credits)

Introduction to the Hindi writing system and phonetics. Simple sentences and their grammar. The course also includes a component in which students conduct a study of Hindi morphology or syntax in comparison with languages they have studied previously.

Subcourse 2: Hindi grammar and oral and written language skills in Hindi II (7.5 credits)

Reading and listening comprehension exercises, simple dialogues and their grammar.

Instruction

The teaching consists of lectures, exercises and examinations. The student's own learning activities are crucial for the completion of the course. In classroom teaching with linguistic elements, good preparation for and active participation in the lessons is required.

Assessment

Subcourse 1: Hindi grammar and oral and written language skills in Hindi I (7.5 credits)

The examination has three components

1. continuous oral and written assignments (grading scale U/G/VG)
2. final written test (grading scale U/G/VG)
3. PM (grading scale U/G/VG).

Information on the content and format of the continuous oral and written assignments, the date of completion/submission and re-examination is given at the start of the course.

For grade G on the module, G is required on all components. For the grade VG, VG is required on all components.

Subcourse 2: Hindi grammar and oral and written language skills in Hindi II (7.5 credits)

The examination consists of two components

1. continuous oral and written assignments (grading scale U/G/VG)
2. final written test (grading scale U/G/VG).

Information on the content and format of the continuous oral and written assignments, the date of completion/submission and re-examination is given at the start of the course.

For grade G on the module, G is required on both components. For the grade VG, VG is required on both components.

For the grade VG on the entire course, the student must have obtained this grade on both modules.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
