Learning outcomes

After the completion of the course the student should be able to

  • explain basic basic principles for the development of landforms through time
  • explain landform building processes and the factors controlling their mechanisms
  • explain how variations in climate and environment affect landform development
  • understand the interactions between endogenic and exogenic processes
  • relate the geomorphology on Earth to Planetary geomorphology
  • describe scaling issues in geomorphological systems in space and time
  • describe the historical background to and concepts of Geomorphology
  • explain the application of geomorphology, and the use of geomorphological methods and analytical techniques.

Content

History and main concepts of Geomorphology. Endogenic, exogenic and Planetary geomorphology. Mass movement and weathering processes. Fluvial, littoral, eolian and periglacial landforms and processes. Landform development in different climates and time perspectives. Earth structure and plate tectonics interactions with . Field and laboratory methods. Excursions and field studies.

Instruction

The course is given using lectures, seminars, written reports and papers, field trips and computer laboratory work. The attendance in seminars and field trips is obligatory.

Assessment

Examination is held during and at the end of the course. Grading on the scale 3, 4 or 5 is given provided all exercises; seminars and reports and field work are completed and deemed approved. Written examination corresponds to 9 ECTS-crdeits and compulsory parts 6 ECTS-credits.
