Learning outcomes

At the end of the course a student will be expected to:

• be in command of the methodology of writing a thesis,
• account for the early history of Central Asia and Turkey,
• describe the main developments in the history of the Ottoman empire in its earlier periods,
• describe the developments of the Ottoman empire in its later periods,
• account for the founding of the Turkish Republic and its development in its early period,
• account for the political and social situation in the Turkish Republic in the last decades,
• account for the historical and political role of Central Asia in the rivalry between the great political powers in the 19th and 20th centuries,
• account for the present political and social situation in Central Asia,
• write a thesis about given aspects of the history and political development of Central Asia.

Content

The course gives an introduction into the political history of Turkey and Central Asia with emphasis on the modern periods and into the social and economic characteristics of the regions. An introduction into the methodology of writing a thesis is included.

Instruction

The basic elements are lectures, seminars and colloquia. The student’s work on his/her own plays an important role.

Assessment

The student will be examined through a combination of different moments either during the course or at a given time agreed upon with the teacher.
