Aims

- To present an anthropological perspective on the study of armed conflicts, and thereby broaden students' understanding of the socio-cultural processes that characterise, precede and succeed an armed conflict.

- To offer basic anthropological competence to students with an interest in humanitarian aid, journalism, and conflict resolution.

- To relate local phenomena, such as changing gender roles, children and youth in war, and refugees, to global phenomena, such as media coverage, international aid politics, and arms trade.

Instruction

The course is comprised of lectures, seminars based on readings, and examination of visual materials such as films and media images. 75% attendance is required. Participation in seminars is mandatory. The language of instruction is English.

Assessment

The course grade is based on active participation and the writing of a paper. Grades Pass with distinction (VG), pass (G), fail (U).
