Entry requirements

Admitted to the Master's programme (two-year) in Bioinformatics.

Learning outcomes

After the course, the student should be able to

  • demonstrate basic knowledge of cell and molecular biology
  • demonstrate basic knowledge of evolution of cells and organisms
  • demonstrate basic knowledge of bioinformatics

    demonstrate basic knowledge of macromolecular structure, including structural, dynamical and classification analysis

  • analyse and discuss research topics within cell and molecular biology and bioinformatics.

In the course, an introduction to Master's studies is included. After passing this module, the

student should be able to

  • demonstrate awareness of ethical aspects of research and development, including questions of plagiarism
  • demonstrate insight into the potential and limitations of bioinformatics and its role in society
  • make an individual study plan.

Content

Basic knowledge of DNA and chromosomes. Replication, transcription and translation. Recombination and repair of DNA. Regulation of gene expression. Structure and function of proteins, RNA, and DNA. The components of the cell. Basic sequence and structural bioinformatics. Application of bioinformatic research. Computer exercises within a bioinformatic research setting. Ethical aspects within education and research. The role of bioinformatics in the society.

Instruction

The teaching will be given in the form of lectures, seminars, and laboratory sessions.

Assessment

The following requirements apply to pass the modules:

For the basic cell- and molecular biology module ( 4 credits) passing a written examination and active participation in seminars are required.

For the bioinformatics in research module ( 5 credits) passing a written examination as well as completed lab reports and active participation in seminars are required.

For the structural bioinformatics module (4 credits), passing a written examination, completed assignments, lab exercises, and active participation are required.

For the introduction to the Master's studies (2 credits) active participation in seminars, written report and study planning will be required.

Other directives

The course has students from various backgroundand teaching will partially be given with individual approach.
