Game Design 1: Introduction, 15 credits
Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, students will be able to:
- display a basic understanding and knowledge of production procedures, i.e. the planning, implementation, documentation and evaluation of a game development project,
- apply theoretical design tools in productions,
- present and justify design decisions,
- display a basic knowledge of group dynamics,
- show a basic knowledge of Agile Scrum as a game development method.
Content
The course includes a project where groups of students use a concept document to produce a game. The students themselves choose one of the concept documents created during the course Game Design 1 – Introduction. As their development work progresses, students provide weekly reports about the work they are doing.
The course encompasses the entire project process from concept to a usable demo: i.e. choice of concept, production of a design document based on the concept chosen, production and updating of a Scrum document, reflective weekly reports on the work being done, regular monitoring and verbal reports, implementation, presentation and evaluation of the project.
Instruction
Teaching consists of lectures, seminars and supervision during the project.
Assessment
The following will be assessed: Scrum-documents, weekly reports, project implementation and the project report.
Assessment is of verbal reports on the project work, a written individual project report and the project plan in the form of the Scrum and weekly reports.
Grades
The possible grades for the course are Pass with Distinction, Pass or Fail. To achieve a Pass with Distinction grade, a student must receive a Pass with Distinction grade for his/her project report.
Plagiarism and Cheating
Uppsala University has a strict attitude towards cheating and plagiarism and disciplinary measures will be taken against students who are suspected of involvement in any kind of cheating/plagiarism. The disciplinary measures take the form of a warning and suspension for a limited period.
