Learning outcomes

This course aims to provide students with the methodological tools and analytical skills used in examining and presenting both the physical sites and the visual material associated with the field of cultural heritage. These skills can then be applied within academic research and in professional careers focusing on museums, archives, archaeology and the heritage sector.

Upon the completion of the course students will be able to

  • understand, discuss and contrast the various definitions, uses and expressions of cultural heritage, history and place, as well as their visual articulations,
  • understand and make use of the methodological and analytical tools that are presented in the course in order to analyse local, regional and global visual material linked to cultural heritage,
  • present individual analyses of visual articulations of heritage, in both oral and written forms.

Content

This course includes current theories in the study of visual culture and the emerging field of critical heritage studies. The course specifically emphasises the ways in which identity, location, globalisation and cultural heritage are visualised not only within traditional visual arts but also in archives, cultural sites, landscapes, cultural institutions, marketing, digital and visual media. The course approaches all of the above from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Instruction

The course is taught through a combination of compulsory lectures, seminars with student-based activities, workshops and excursions. Students will present both oral and written assignments within the course.

Language of instruction is English.

Assessment

Grades will be given in accordance with the Swedish grading system. The following grades will be used: VG (pass with distinction), G (pass) and U (fail). The course consists of compulsory components. Examination consists of active participation in seminars and completion of assignments. The final course grade will be determined by compiling the results of these compulsory components.

This course can not be included in an exam with a course whose content fully or partially overlaps with the contents of this course.

At the beginning of the course the course coordinator will give directions on how missing mandatory elements shall be compensated.
