Learning outcomes
Regarding knowledge and understanding, on completion of the course the student will be able to:
- describe the role the subject information systems have in academia and society;
- explain basic principles of business development and development of information systems and its included parts;
- account at a general level for the relation between software engineering and knowledge development in the subject information systems.
Regarding skills and abilities, on completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- plan, carry out and interpret interviews in order to understand organisational needs in connection with development of information systems;
- formulate requirements of IT-systems;
- create basic conceptual models of activities and IT-systems;
- identify possibilities and challenges with the use of digital resources in activities as well as strategies for digital business development.
Regarding judgment and approach , on the completion of the course the student will be able to:
- search and evaluate sources in the area of information systems critically;
- argue orally and in writing with a clear traceability to literature and collect data.
Content
The course gives an introduction to central concepts in the area of Information Systems:
- Information system and Information Systems manager role;
- Interested parties and different perspectives in business and systems development
- IT-systems, informations systems and organisation
- The importance of methods for business and systems development
- Models and conceptual modelling
- Strategies for management and use of digital resources
- Design research
Module 1: Fundamentals of information systems, 2,5 credits
This module introduces basic concepts in information system including concept around activities IT-systems conceptual models and design research. In this part is introduced also how knowledge development take place and where research results are published.
Module 2: User-centered design of IT-system, 3,5 credits
In this module, students carry out interviews to investigate organisational needs and based on the results develop conceptual models and design prototypes for an IT-system.
Module 3: Management and use of digital resources, 1,5 credits
This module focuses on strategies for management and use of digital resources to solve challenges and create opportunities for business development.
Instruction
The course is given in form of lectures, seminars and laboratory work.
Assessment
The course is assessed through laboratory sessions, seminars and assignments.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator or a decision by the department's working group for study matters.
