Learning outcomes

After the course the student shall have basic knowledge about remote sensing systems that can be used to investigate the earth's atmosphere and surface.

On completion of the course, the student should:

  • have knowledge of different types of remote sensing systems
  • know how to use remote sensing data for studies of processes in the atmosphere
  • know how remote sensing data can be used in climatological studies
  • have knowledge on radiation processes in the atmosphere
  • explain the basics of geographic information systems (GIS)

Content

Basic principles of remote sensing, digital image processing and raster models. Basics of GIS: Coordinate systems and projections, spatial data models and their structure, spatial database technology.. Satellite parameters, sensors and platforms, Remote sensing systems: radar, sodar, lidar lightning detection, cloud height meter. Radiation processes in the atmosphere.

Instruction

Lessons, computer assignments and project work.

Assessment

Written examination at the end of the course ( 4 credits). To pass requires an approved project work (3 credits), approved computer assignments (2 credits) and active participation in seminars (1 credit).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
