Entry requirements

120 credits with (1) 90 credits in earth science and 15 credits in chemistry, or (2) 90 credits in physics and 30 credits in earth science, or (3) 90 credits in geology. Mineralogy and Petrology, 15 credits. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • describe the geological evolution of Fennoscandinavia and draw comparisons to modern analogues
  • identify paragenetic mineral assemblages and evaluate metamorphic geological evolution
  • interpret geochemical and isotopic data and make critical evaluation
  • construct geochemical and thermodynamic models

Content

The main emphasis will be ancient and current accretionary and collisional orogens as well as (paleo-)ocean opening processes. Well studied orogens in Fennoscandinavia like the Svecofennian/Svecokarelian and Caledonian will be compared with on-going orogens such as the Andean, New Zealand, Himalayan that represent current analogues of accretionary and collisional orogens. The course will present the geological evolution of Fennoscandinavia and Iceland, the role of metamorphism, the influence of orogenic processes for ore formation, as well as recent progress in geochronology. The practical exercises will be focused on metamorphic petrography, micro-structure analysis, geochemical and thermodynamic modelling including thermobarometry and geochronology as well as societal relevance.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, group work, practical and computer exercises and project work. Participation in group work, exercises, project work and seminars and related lectures is compulsory.

Training in communication skills with feedback is included in this course.

Assessment

The examination is divided into written examination 6 credits, active seminar participation, and oral and written presentations of project work 4 credits.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
