General provisions

The course is given as a freestanding course.

Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree with Turkish as the main field of study, including an independent project worth at least 15 credits.

Learning outcomes

To obtain the grade Pass, on completion of the course students should at least be able to:

- give an account of the most important phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical differences between historical and modern Turkic languages;

- give an account of the classification of the Turkic languages;

- describe the development of Turkic languages;

- use the historical-comparative linguistic method in analysis of selected Turkic languages.

Content

The course includes studies in the classification and description of historical Turkic languages. Furthermore, an introduction is given to the historical-comparative linguistic method. The course also contains training in generic proficiencies such as presenting and critically discussing scientific topics.

Instruction

The instruction consists of lectures, exercises and assessment. The student's own learning activities are crucial for completion of the course.

Assessment

The course has two assessment components:

1. continuous oral and written assignments;

2. written examination.

For the grade Pass, Pass is required in all components. For the grade Pass with distinction, Pass with distinction is furthermore required in component 2.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. Special circumstances can include notification of special educational support from the university disability coordinator.

Other regulations

The course may not be included in a degree if equivalent components have been studied in another course included in the degree.
