Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- account for basic gender scientific theories of sex and gender
- account for basic evolutionary explanations of sexual reproduction in biology
- describe how heritage and environment interact, both from a biological and a gender scientific perspective
- reflect on and discuss knowledge and general conceptions of sex and gender
- report on an interdisciplinary task where biology and gender science meet
Content
The course is multidisciplinary in that biology and gender science meet with regard to sex and gender. The course includes basic gender science theories on how sex/gender is constructed through norms and values in society. The course contains a general overview of the biological organism's diversity and evolution, with a special focus on sexual reproduction as well as how genes and the environment interact. Gender science and biology will be treated interdisciplinary in discussions and project work on sex and gender.
Instruction
The teaching is carried out through interactive multidisciplinary lectures and seminars based on literature read. Work with feedback for coequal discussion forms and norm criticism is included. The course is an evening course with lectures and seminars, as well as weekend conference at the end of the course. Participation in seminars and weekend conferences is mandatory.
Assessment
For passed course, preparation and active participation in seminar discussions (2 credits), as well as approved oral and written presentation of an interdisciplinary in-depth assignment (2 credits) and active participation in weekend conference (1 credit) are required.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
