General provisions

The content, length and level of the education are regulated by chapter 1, section 9 of the Higher Education Act 1 (1992:1434), by the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), and by the Ordinance on changes to the Higher Education Ordinance (2006:1053).

The course is given in semester 6 in the Biomedical Laboratory Science Programme and consists of critical evaluation of scientific work from a biomedical laboratory science perspective as well as practicing skills in scientific oral presentation. In addition, students are trained in the ability to inform different target groups both in writing and orally. The students' exercises intend to give an advanced critical attitude to scientific works.

The course replaces 3MC008 Advanced Course II .

Entry requirements

1) Passed courses equivalent to at least 90 credits corresponding to year 1 and 2 in the programme are required and a maximum of two examinations left of which no more than one from year 1. 2) For admission to the course as a separate course, an older biomedical science education or equivalent skills is/are required.

Learning outcomes

Skills and abilities: On completion of the course the student should be able to

- show ability to give scientific feedback when reviewing scientific texts even from a statistical perspective

- use critical analytical thinking when reviewing a scientific oral presentation

- show ability to adapt an oral or written presentation to a chosen target group

- apply his/her knowledge in an oral presentation to course participants

Knowledge and understanding: On completion of the course the student should be able to

- show an advanced and broadened knowledge in biomedical laboratory science in a subject chosen by the student from previously completed courses

Judgement and approach: On completion of the course the student should be able to

- evaluate if a scientific presentation satisfies the legal requirement of uniqueness

- discuss ethical aspects in relation to research in biomedical laboratory science

Content

Reviews of essays and scientific work. Public discussion. Oral presentation. Plagiarism and cheating. Interprofessional learning session. Elective: Oral or written instruction/information to a chosen target group.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, student reports.

Assessment

Passed oral and written presentations and all compulsory parts. If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Students who fail to pass the examination have the right to retake the examination on 4 additional occasions (= a total of 5 examination attempts). Each time the student participates in seminars and presentations counts as an examination occasion. If no oral or written presentation is given within the established time frame, this counts as an examination occasion. Additional examination opportunities may be allowed after discussions with course leaders and program coordinators.

Other directives

The course cannot be included in the same degree as 3MC008 Advanced Course II.
