Entry requirements

120 credits with 60 credits in chemistry including 15 credits in organic chemistry. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • explain attributes of various modern reactions applicable to organic synthesis (e.g. selectivity or mechanism),
  • identify appropriate reactions and their applicability to the syntheses or transformations of organic molecules,
  • find, present and critically evaluate relevant  reports in modern research literature relating to synthetic methods in organic chemistry,
  • describe the processes and key concepts around the publication of peer-reviewed literature relevant to organic synthesis (e.g. article types, metrics),
  • plan and perform the synthesis of organic compounds using modern approaches
  • perform risk assessments for experiments and document laboratory work in the form of a lab journal

Content

Methods to synthesise organic compounds, including modern approaches to the construction of C-C, C-N and other C-heteroatom bonds. Modern catalytic and stoichiometric approaches to various functional group interconversions. Presentation and discussion of literature reports relating to advances in organic synthetic methodology. Laboratory work based on modern synthetic methodology.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, laboratory exercises.

Assessment

A written examination at the end of the course (4 credits). Practical exercises in the laboratory, including pre-lab sessions, seminars and written reporting (1 credit). 

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the  university.

Other directives

This course cannot be included in a degree together with the course 1KB443 Modern Methods for Organic Chemistry 10 cr.
