Entry requirements

120 credits in science/engineering. Either: Solid State Physics I, Surface Characterisation and Surface and Materials Analysis; or: Introduction to Materials Engineering, Surface Characterisation and attended course in Materials Analysis. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student shall be able to:

  • plan and realise the appropriate analysis strategy for samples,
  • critically evaluate the results of the analysis carried out,
  • for a given problem, compare and rank the applicability of different techniques,
  • search and assess relevant articles to refine the analysis strategy,
  • have in-depth knowledge of the presented microscopy, spectroscopy and diffraction techniques analysis techniques,
  • explain the principle behind important analytical techniques and methods discussed in the course (TEM and spectrometers for electron spectroscopy, among others).

Content

The aim of the course is to enable the student to contribute to the improvement of materials, with regard to properties, synthesis methods and applicability, using advanced analytical methods.In-depth understanding in microscopic and spectroscopic techniques for material analysis will be taught in lectures, seminars, assignments and laboratory courses. Diffraction techniques. X-ray and electron spectroscopic techniques, imaging methods such as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and electron diffraction are contents of this course.

Instruction

Lectures and project work in a group with laboratory elements.

Assessment

Oral examination (3 credits). Written and oral presentation of project assignments (2 credits).
