Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide in-depth knowledge in the field of grammar.
For the grade Pass, after completing the course the student should be able to
- describe, compare and analyse morphosyntactic structures in complex sentences in different languages from a functional-descriptive perspective
- describe and discuss basic ideas and essential differences between functional and some other grammatical theories.
- identify and describe underlying theoretical assumptions in grammatical descriptions of different languages
- independently and critically a published descriptive grammatical description of a language previously unknown to the student.
Content
Description of linguistic phenomena at the sentence level, such as nominalization, complement clause, relative clause, adverbial clause, clause chain, coordination-subordination. The description of these syntactic constructions also takes into account their semantic and pragmatic properties.
Instruction
The teaching consists of lectures, exercises and assessment. The student's own learning activities are of crucial importance for the work on the course.
Assessment
The course has two examinatory components:
- a written assignment (grading scale U/G/VG)
- an oral presentation (grading scale U/G).
Regulations for the written work and the presentation are available at the beginning of the course. Submission of the written work takes place at the end of the course, the exact date for submission is announced by the teacher at the start of the course. For G (Pass), G is required on all parts. For VG (Pass with distinction), a VG is also required on the written work.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
