Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course students will

  • be able to plan and theoretically argue how to teach English in the classroom;
  • be able to demonstrate knowledge of how theory and methods in second language learning (English) have developed and changed;
  • be able to critically assess new teaching methods and learning strategies in second language learning;
  • be able to participate actively and independently in seminar discussions by presenting minor research topics with second language learning;
  • be able to demonstrate familiarity with research methods in second language learning and didactics;
  • be able to take a scientific approach to primary and secondary literature.

Content

The module primarily sets out to review methodology for teaching English language structure (e.g. grammar and vocabulary learning). Students are to systematize the most important theories in second-language acquisition and make use of them in devising their own teaching methods. The module also aims to thoroughly familiarise students with methods involving the use of corpora in language teaching.

Instruction

Group sessions. Instruction, class discussions, and examinations are in English. All teaching materials are in English.

Assessment

Students are examined in the form of oral presentations, written assignments, and a written home essay. Grades are fail, pass, or pass with distinction.

Students who fail a regular examination will be offered a make-up examination within a reasonable period of time after the regular examination.

Students who fail an examination twice have the right to apply to the head of the department for permission to change examiners or examination forms.

Other directives

If the curriculum or the course literature for a course is changed, students have the right to be examined on the original curriculum and course literature on three occasions during the following three terms. After these three opportunities, the right normally expires.

Transitional provisions

Please contact the student counsellor for transitional regulations in connection with changes in the curriculum.
