The course is given within the master's programme in precision medicine (MPM2M). This motivates the grading system.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

A student that has passed the course should

  • demonstrate basic knowledge about the programming language R
  • show basic understanding of algorithms in R
  • know how to find information about how different functions in R work

Competence and skills

A student that has passed the course should be able to

  • to read, modify and describe data in R
  • to write, interpret and run simple R code
  • to conduct data visualization using R

Judgement and approach

A student that has passed the course should be able

  • to critically review what kinds of tasks can be solved using R

Content

The course includes basic data manipulation in R, e.g., import of data, data cleaning and working with data in vectors, matrices and data frames. The course also includes description, tables and data visualization. The course introduces basic R programming with functions, vectorization, loops, and control structures (e.g., if-statements, and while, and for loops). A number of general science-related questions are discussed during joint seminars, which also include generic competences and professional skills such as presentation skills and research ethics, with the aim to prepare the student for future career.

Instruction

Teaching is given in the form of lectures, computer exercises and mandatory seminars.

Assessment

The examination takes place through a written examination at the end of the course and through written and/or oral presentations of mandatory submissions. If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University 's disability coordinator.
