General provisions

The course is provided as electable course for master programs at the Medical Faculty. It is also open as free-standing course for participants working in Life Science-related areas/professions (sales specialist, researcher, application specialist, medicinal representative, etc) who wish to develop/refresh knowledge within the area.

Entry requirements

Undergraduate education of 180 credits within life sciences (e.g. biomedicine, biotechnology, medicine, veterinary medicine), and 30 credits at Master's level within life sciences. Proficiency in English equivalent to the general entry requirements for first-cycle (Bachelor's level) studies.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

On completing the course, the student shall demonstrate the ability to:

* Explain basic principles of different formats of scientific communication

Competence and skills

On completing the course, the student shall demonstrate the ability to:

* Apply scientific and popular scientific forms of communication to convey biomedicial knowledge and research in a correct and understandable manner.

Judgement and approach

On completing the course, the student shall demonstrate the ability to:

* Judge and argue for different methods of presentation.

Content

The course includes different formats of scientific and popular scientific communication:

* Scientific writing: akademic writing in English, structure of scientific abstracts and articles

* Oral presentation: scientific presentation, podcast, pitch-communication

* Popular science: from press release to newspaper article, social media and Wikipedia

Instruction

Education is performed in form of:

* Lectures, mandatory practical exercises and group discussions on scientific presentation and communication.

* Participants will present different tasks for one another and get feedback by teachers and course participants on different communication techniques.

Assessment

To achieve a pass for the course, the student requires a pass grad on all tasks and that all mandatory elements are completed.

Students who have not passed parts of the course can complement those during the ongoing course or at upcoming course occasions.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University´s disability coordinator.
