Entry requirements

120 credits including 90 credits in technology. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

The course aims to equip students with key knowledge about the functions of the firm with a specific focus on business strategies and organisational issues as viewed within industrial operations.

On completion of the course the student shall be able to:

  • define the role of the firm in relation to the surrounding context and the entire society, considering how the firm is organised and managed via strategic plans,
  • discuss the most important perspectives within organisational studies,
  • analyse the context of an organisation in terms of competitors, customers, suppliers and other stakeholders,
  • analyse the strategies of a firm by means of the most important strategy models, so to be able to identify the possibilities and barriers for a firm's development,
  • explicate the connection between technology, context and the firm's internal organisation,
  • formulate a company's strategy based on the models and concepts discussed during the course,
  • choose, prepare, interpret and use cost estimates as a basis for the different situations in an industrial company,
  • interpret financial statements and other financial reports of industrial companies, including the income statement, the balance sheet, the cash flow statement and key measures in these,
  • describe and discuss usual work tasks of an industrial management and innovation professional,
  • execute project work, including fulfiling the formal requirements of a report related to structure and references,
  • reflect upon one's group work in relation to theories on group dynamics,
  • seek, sort, and critically scrutinize and analyse economic and technical information based on adequate research methods,
  • prepare and execute an oral presentation,
  • reflect upon attitudes to teaching and learning.

Content

Industrial management, organisational forms and organising. Business strategies, marketing and purchasing.Volume analysis, costing, investment appraisal, accounting and bookkeeping, budgeting, financing, financial analysis, pricing and management control are discussed as support for and a background to decision-making.

Equal opportunities. Group dynamics in multi-cultural teams. Critical thinking. Theories and best practice in written and oral communication. Alumni meeting. Study visit to an organisation.

Instruction

Lectures, exercises, case discussions, study visit, group projects, and seminars.

Assessment

Written home exam, active participation in seminars, exercises, case discussions, and study visit, written group and individual assignments, oral presentations and final memo.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.

Other directives
