Turkic Languages 1, 30 credits and at least 22.5 credits from Turkic Languages 2

Learning outcomes

The course is an introduction to Turkic linguistics and intends to give a general introduction to the distinctive structural features of the Turkic languages (with particular attention to the structure of Turkish), the Turkic language type and language contacts.

For the grade of Pass, on completion of the course students should be able to

• give an account for the sound systems, morphophonological systems, and structural features of the Turkic languages
• use linguistic methods to analyse Turkic language materials
• describe the language contacts between Turkic and non-Turkic languages at a general level.

Content

The course includes studies in Turkic linguistics, the distinctive structural features of the Turkic languages, the Turkic language type and language contacts. Exercises in linguistic analysis are carried out.

Instruction

The instruction consists of lectures, exercises and assessment. The student's own learning activities are crucial for their work during the course.

Assessment

The course has two assessment components:

1. continuous oral and written assignments (grade U/G)
2. final written examination (grade U/G/VG)

For the grade Pass, Pass is required on both components. For the grade Pass with distinction, Pass with distinction is furthermore required in component 2.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may decide to make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. Special circumstances can include notification of special educational support from the University's disability coordinator.
