Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university.

Learning outcomes

After accomplishing the course, the student is expected to:

• Be oriented in current theoretical trends in relation to how anthropology and ethnology might be applied in non-academic settings.
• Possess a basic understanding of some of the differences between pursuing anthropological and ethnological research in academic setting, and applying it in non-academic settings.
• Possess skills in how to develop professional documents to include anthropological and ethnological contents: documents such as policy papers, desk-studies and interview-based studies, and Terms of Reference.

Content

The objective of the course is to focus on how anthropological and ethnological knowledge can be applied to activities of non-academic organizations, both private and public. The course will be based on lectures by academics and professionals with experience of applying anthropology and ethnology in their work in government authorities, consultancy firms and NGOs, and will be combined with practical assignments, such as the writing of professional presentations; writing and assessing policy papers and reports, as well as to elaborate Terms of References.

Instruction

The course is comprised of one or more of the following forms: lectures, seminars, field practise and/or tutoring. Language of instruction is English.

Assessment

The examination will be in one or more of the following forms: home exam, memo writing, group work, active seminar participation and/or oral exam.

The course will be assessed with the following grade system: Fail (U), Pass (G), Pass with distinction (VG).
