Learning outcomes
After completing the course successfully, the student should be able to:
- relate the properties, performance, and lifespan of battery systems to how they are constructed, from individual battery cells to modules and packs,
- identify challenges and propose strategies for how batteries can be integrated into larger systems with safe, efficient, and reliable operation,
- plan and analyze complete systems for electrochemical energy storage where batteries are integrated with electronic control and other auxiliary systems for the intended application,
- discuss and justify the use of different algorithms and apply techniques for the control and management of battery systems for optimal performance and lifespan.
Content
Design of battery packs from battery modules and individual cells from electrical, chemical, and mechanical perspectives. Temperature regulation of battery packs. Estimation of state of health (SoH) and state of charge (SoC). Algorithms for battery management. Mechanisms for degradation of SoH. Adaptation to different application areas and usage scenarios, including integration into functional systems. Optimization of charging. Execution of complex tasks in cross-functional groups.
Instruction
Lectures and seminars.
Assessment
Written exam, as well as written and oral presentation of assignments.
If there are special reasons for doing so, the examiner may make exceptions from the specified examination method of assessment and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
