Learning outcomes

After accomplishing the course, the student is expected to:

  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of concepts and theories related to the construction and representation of human differences in social and cultural contexts.
  • Have an understanding of ethnographic methods in contexts where difference is constructed, communicated, negotiated, and contested.
  • Account for various differences between ethnographers and their interlocutors.
  • Reflect on processes of documenting and representing difference in ethnographic work visually and textually.

Content

The objective of the course is to engage with a series of ethnographic perspectives to comprehend and analyse social differences. It will provide theoretical and methodological frameworks for studying three interlocking levels of difference and discrimination: i) how differences that foreground ethnic, racial, gender, class and dis/ability identities are constructed, imposed, represented, claimed and contested; ii) how difference can be thought as both a productive and a retrogressive social, political, and cultural force, and iii) how differences between ethnographers and interlocutors are understood and approached methodologically.

Instruction

The course is comprised of one or more of the following forms: lectures, seminars, workshops, field practice and tutoring. Language of instruction is English.

Assessment

The examination will be in one or more of the following forms: essay writing, visual and textual group work, active seminar participation and/or oral presentation.
