Sanskrit A, Sanskrit B and at least 22.5 credits from Indology C

Learning outcomes

The course is aiming firstly to further broaden and increase knowledge in Old- and Middle Indo-Aryan Languages and literatures and older Indian cultural history, and secondly to deepen experiences relating to academic research.

To receive the grade Pass the student should at least be able to:

* with a certain safety analyse and interpret text from different genres and periods in Sanskrit, Middle Indo-Aryan and Vedic linguistically and grammatically;

* make a profound philological analysis of original texts while taking the relevant commentaries and research literature under consideration;

* write a degree essay (15 credits) on a special research-related issue and carry out a study;

plan this task (define aims, distinguish steps in achieving it and dispose the periods to be used for it), follow the plan and take independent responsibility for it;

give an overview of the research situation regarding this issue based on a systematic study of secondary literature;

present the results of this study in writing in an academic and structured essay, with a professional and well-designed diction;

follow established formal conventions regarding structure and typography of the essay, including correct quotes and references:

orally present and discuss the study for an audience of peers;

assess a study and essay within the subject at a similar level with regard to research question, result, argumentation and presentation.

Content

The course consists of three modules.

Module 1: Text course in Sanskrit, Vedic or Middle Indian language, 7.5 credits

Advanced study of selected text samples from different genres in their respective language.

Module 2: Optional independent study linked to the degree project, 7.5 credits

Self-study based reading of literary or scientific texts related to the subject. The self-study based reading should be chosen in connection with the special project within the scope of Module 3 and in consultation with the examiner.

Module 3. Degree project, 15 credits

An essay that treats a selected subject within Indian studies is written and discussed at a seminar.

Instruction

The teaching consists of three parts: lectures, exercises and examination. The student's self-study is of crucial weight for the completion of the course.

Assessment

To receive the grade "Passed with distinction" for the complete course, the participant is required to have received this grading for at least 22.5 credits.

The course has the following moments of examination:

subcourse 1: continuous oral and written tests

subcourse 2: pm + oral presentation;

subcourse 3: independent undertaking + oral presentation/discussion, 15.0 hp.

The content and format of the continuous oral and written assignments, the date of completion/submission and information about re-examination are given at the start of the course.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Other regulations

The course may not be included in a higher education qualification as an independent course if parts of it form part of another course that is included in a higher education qualification.
