General provisions

The course is offered as a freestanding course, as a module in Linguistics A, and within the first semester of Bachelor's Programme in Languages. It can also be taken as an optional course within the Language Technology Program and the Master in Language Technology.

Learning outcomes

The student should be able to complete the following minimal requirements to obtain a passing grade (G):

- describe the emergence of the sociolinguistic perspective;

- present sociolinguistic theories, methods, and research questions;

- define terminology and phenomena within main areas of sociolinguistic research;

- discuss commonalities and differences between sociolinguistic research areas.

Content

The course gives an overview of sociolinguistic theories, methods, and research questions. Main research areas include variation and language, variation and style, language attitudes, politeness theory, multilingualism, social class, social networks and communities of practice, gender, language contact and conversation analysis.

Instruction

The instruction consists of lectures, quizzes, exercises, written assignments. The student's own learning activities are crucial for the completion of the course.

Assessment

The course has four moments of examination:

1. duggor;

2. group exercises;

3. written tests for submission;

4. written examination.

Instructions concerning the content and format of the duggor, group exercises and tests for submission as well as the dates of completion/submission and re-examination are announced at the start of the course.

For the grade Pass (G), Pass is required in all moments. For the grade Pass with distinction (VG), Pass with distinction is required in moment 4 as well as Pass in the other moments.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Other regulations

The course may not be included in a degree if the equivalent parts have been studied within another course included in the degree.
