General entry requirements

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students are expected to be able to:

• Explain ethnological research, methods, and perspectives on Swedish society and culture.
• Describe the cultural context of modern and societal change.
• Account for folk traditions and social organization in early modern Swedish society.
• Discuss the development of the Swedish welfare state.
• Identify debates and issues in contemporary Sweden.

Content

The course introduces ethnological analysis of Swedish society, past and present. It covers:

• Cultural and historical change from agrarian society to today.
• Images of Swedishness, family, and gender.
• Cultural heritage and the impact of globalization.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, written assignments, excursions, and introduction to a small individual fieldwork project. All teaching and literature are in English.

Assessment

Assessment takes place in one or more of the following forms:

• Written exams
• Short papers (PM)
• Group work
• Active seminar participation
• Oral examination
