Entry requirements

Admitted to the Master's Programme in Statistics. 30 credits in statistics at Master's level.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students shall be able to:

• formulate a statistical problem
• independently immerse themselves in a statistical problem
• in written form explain and describe the statistical problem, methods used, and results
• present, actively defend, and discuss their own thesis
• review scientific work

Content

The thesis work goes through a number of steps in accordance with a specified schedule. The students are to write their theses individually. The students shall, independently of each other, find, clearly define, and analyse one or more statistical problems. This includes problematisation, discussions on choice of methods and models, possible collection of data, oral and written presentation.

The progression of the thesis will be presented by the students at several mandatory seminars. On these occasions also literature and plagiarism will be discussed. At the end of the course there is a seminar with presentations and opposition of theses.

Compulsory participation in the scientific seminars given at the Department of Statistics.

Instruction

Teaching is given in form of mandatory seminars and individual supervision. Supervision is only provided during the time the course is in progress.

Assessment

The thesis is graded in its entirety by the examiner in consultation with the supervisor. The assessment of the thesis is based on the extent to which the intended learning outcomes are achieved.
