The course is part of the minor field of study Expression in Convergent Media.

The course is part of the Bachelor's programme in Game Design, 180 credits.

Entry requirements

General entry requirements and Mathematics 2a or 2b or 2c

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course, students will be able to:

• Describe and apply fundamental methods and theories of testing for level design.
• Display an ability to develop levels within predefined constraints.
• Display an ability to plan and perform game tests with the purpose to gather data, as well as use data to critically analyse elements of a level's design.
• Analyse test data to iterate on the design of a game level to achieve an experiential goal.

Content

Throughout the course, students use analogue and digital level prototypes to perform tests with the purpose to gather data, to help achieve the experience goals of a designed level. Using the data, the students develop proposed changes to the level's design, with the aim to reach measurable design and experience goals. The course ends with a presentation where the student describes their tests, discusses the data and the final result.

Instruction

Instruction takes place through lectures and workshops and seminars.

Assessment

Course assessment takes place throughout the course and is based on participation in seminars and a final presentation.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University´s disability coordinator.

Uppsala University does not accept cheating or plagiarism. Suspected incidents of cheating or plagiarism are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, which may issue a formal warning to the student or suspend the student from studies for a certain period.
