About the course:
The course gives an introduction to the scientific description of linguistic meaning. Historical review of various approaches to description of meaning in language. Basic semiotics. Both lexical and compositional semantics are discussed. Extensions and extensional analysis (set theory). Definitions and prototypes. Introduction to truth-value semantics and logical analysis. The relationship between semantics and pragmatics. Basic pragmatics: presupposition, tropes (for example, irony, metaphor and metonymy), speech acts, conversational maxims and implicatures.
