Topic: “Unraveling the toxicity of nanoparticles and microplastics: insights from in vitro models”
Welcome to the SweDeliver webinar series. This time, we are delighted to host Hanna Karlsson, Professor of Toxicology at the Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences, Uppsala University. Prof. Karlsson will give a presentation titled “Unraveling the toxicity of nanoparticles and microplastics: insights from in vitro models”
Short Biography by Prof. Karlsson:
My research primarily focuses on investigating the toxic effects, underlying mechanisms, and potential health risks associated with various particles. Current projects include studies on nanoparticles from transportation, particles generated during welding and 3D printing, as well as nano and microplastics. For many years, my main focus was nanoparticle induced toxicity.
In this presentation, I will summarize key findings from my nanotoxicology research, focusing on the different experimental models we use. Alongside standard toxicity assays, we applied the ToxTracker reporter system to evaluate stress responses and (geno)toxicity. To better mimic inhalation exposure, we used air–liquid interface (ALI) systems instead of conventional submerged cultures. In some studies, we also assessed RNA seq–based gene expression changes and investigated long term outcomes, including malignant transformation, following 6 week exposures of lung cells.
