Biomimetic and Bioinspired Catalysis

Biomimetic catalysts inspired by nature for the sustainable energy conversion.

Description of the project

Beyond studying natural enzymes, our team also develops biomimetic catalysts and artificial enzymes inspired by biological systems. These model systems allow us to test mechanistic hypotheses, probe how encapsulation modifies the (catalytic) properties of metal cofactors, and identify design principles for catalytic energy conversion.

The research combines synthetic chemistry, biochemistry, spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and photochemistry to address how biological systems control complex multi-electron reactions. By linking fundamental studies of metalloenzymes with the design of hybrid and biomimetic systems, our team aims to advance both the understanding of biological catalysis and the development of new strategies for renewable energy conversion.
