Sophie Jansson Works at a Communications Agency

Interview from 2025

What do you work with today and where? What does a normal work day/week look like?

I currently work as a Public Affairs/Corporate Communication Lead at the communications agency Burson. In practice, this means that I am a consultant and support organizations in building and managing relationships with decision-makers, authorities, the media and the public.

It's a varied job where a week can include everything from monitoring the business environment and mapping different topics to conducting political analysis, developing communication strategies and writing press releases or debate articles. It can also involve developing creative campaigns to help our clients get their messages across in engaging ways. Much of the work is done in collaboration and together with both colleagues and clients.

What was your first job after graduation?

My first job after graduation was actually after my internship at Burson. I worked there for a number of years and then switched to working on organizational and business development at a management consultancy with public sector clients. Later, I came back to Burson again.

How has your education in political science from Uppsala University helped you in your career?

The degree has helped me in many ways. Firstly, in terms of subject matter, with the content and design of the courses, which provided a solid foundation of knowledge, and secondly, how to approach methodology and analysis. I never thought I would say that the methodology courses were so valuable, but they have really been useful in working life.

Why did you choose the Bachelor's Programme in political sciences at Uppsala University?

I was told that the program would give a good mix with political science, economics, statistics and law. Of course, Uppsala is also a wonderful student city!

What is the best memory from your time at Uppsala University?

It's diffucult to choose one, but in general I would say that the best feeling was after studying hard for an exam later to meet up with your friends at the nations and celebrate. So a mix of getting to study really exciting things and living the student life.

What advice would you give to current and future students of political science?

Although the studies themselves are of course important, I want to strike a blow for getting involved in an association, nation or union as a complement. I had the opportunity to join Uppsala Politicesstuderande (UPS) and Uppsala Student Union, which also gave me many fun memories and valuable experiences in working life. It's the big picture that does it!
